York Catholic girls show depth, top Biglerville

Even in victory, York Catholic head coach Kevin Bankos wanted to see his girls' basketball team improve upon a few things.

His squad defeated Biglerville, 63-14, Thursday night in a game that saw the Fighting Irish take a 39-8 lead into halftime. Kate Bauhof didn’t have the offensive explosion she had the game before, but she did manage to drop 11 points in the win and shot 2-for-2 from the line. Gina Citrone led the Fighting Irish in scoring with 12 points, including two shots from beyond the arc.

“I think we have a lot to improve on, but I’m pleased with the number of kids we’re getting in the game,” Bankos said after his team’s third win of the year. “They’re all contributing. I think that’s going to have to be the theme this year… I think the kids are learning, but I think we had too many turnovers. Unforced turnovers.

“I think we tried to do some things that we weren’t capable of doing in individual play and that’s the kind of things you can’t do if you’re going to have a successful year.”

The Irish came storming out of the gate in the first quarter. Emily Laslo’s first six points of the game helped boost York Catholic to a 10-2 lead. Baskets from Bauhof, including a 3-pointer, Jania Wright and Danielle Desseyn helped push the lead to 19-5 by the end of the first quarter.

Biglerville struggled to get anything going offensively. The Irish dominated ball possession, and the Canners made a number of turnovers when they had the ball. They also struggled from the line, shooting 2-for-8.

Elizabeth Burke led the Canners in points. She put up six points in the loss and shot 2-for-4 from the free-throw line. Mini Shirley and Haley Kuhn each put up three points of their own.

Bankos said he knows he's got a younger squad this season, but his expectations for the team are still the same.

“We believe that our program is bigger than any one player that graduates and that’s why we’ve been so successful. This group believes in that also and it’s going to take eight, nine deep,” he said.
