After sleepy start, Lions roar past Dallastown

Halftime likely wasn’t a pretty one for the Red Lion girls' basketball team while it was facing rival Dallastown on Tuesday night.

Lions coach Don Dimoff wasn’t sure if his team was overconfident following a solid weekend tournament victory, or perhaps knowing the Wildcats brought an inexperienced group to the gym.

Either way, a 19-point first-half performance wasn’t what Dimoff envisioned when the evening started.

“Dallastown played very hard, very gritty. They played harder than us in the first half,” Dimoff said. “As I told people all day, it’s Dallastown-Red Lion, enough said.”

The Lions came alive in the second half. After Dallastown’s Julia Sutton tied the game, Amy Maciejewski answered with a 3-pointer, and although Sutton scored again the next time down the floor, Red Lion went on an 11-2 run and won going away, 52-32.

“When we realized they are not just going to let us walk over them, we picked it up,” Dimoff added. “We have to be in top mental and physical shape.”

After Sutton closed the gap to 22-21, Red Lion’s Taylor Funke put home a nice jumper, stretching the lead to three. Moments later, after a Wildcats' turnover, Funke put home an offensive rebound and was fouled.

Her three-point play gave the hosts the momentum they needed and Natalie Reba drained a pair of free throws for a 29-21 lead.

Dallastown freshman Lily Jamison ended the mini run, but the Lions responded by scoring 21 of the next 25 points.

“I told them we did what we needed to do to win. We played a good second half,” Dimoff said.

After missing much of the opening half with two fouls, Maciejewski led all scorers with 12 points. Courtney Dimoff added 11 for the Lions, who improved to 3-0.

Jamison and Sutton had six each for Dallastown (0-3).
