Mifflin County knocks off Bobcats

LEWISTOWN — If Saturday night's Husky Club Tip-Off Club title game was a 100-meter dash, Mifflin County garnered a 70-yard head start.

Mifflin County sophomore Eleana Eckley scored 17 points, and the Huskies jumped out to a 22-point first-quarter lead and never looked back as they knocked off Northeastern for the tournament title, 80-50, at Mifflin County High School on Saturday.

Kendra Meyer scored 20 points, including six 3's, and Jordyn Kloster added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats.

"Obviously, we're not on their level right now," Northeastern coach Gary Sutton said. "I haven't seen a good shooting performance like that in a long time. Those kids were all raining 3's down, so that was hard to watch. We did some good things tonight, we found some things out about some people and played hard until the end."

Jessa Wright scored five of the first 10 points for Mifflin County as the Huskies took a 10-2 lead with 5:12 to go in the opening quarter and forced a Bobcat timeout.

Jordyn Kloster finally ended a run of more than six minutes that saw the Huskies score 19 straight points, and the Bobcats faced a 25-4 deficit after one quarter.

Meyer drilled a late 3-pointer to cut Mifflin County's lead to 33-15, but the Huskies responded with a Mackenzie Roush basket and Wright's steal and finish in transition.

Offensive rebounding was key for Mifflin County over that time period, and resulted in a couple of buckets.

"It's funny to say when you give up 80 points, but we defended well at certain instances, but we didn't clean it up with good rebounding," Sutton said. "That's where you have to go."

Meyer answered a pair of Maggie Wilson baskets with back-to-back 3's to make it 44-23.

Mifflin County came back with seven straight to make it 51-23 before Kloster canned two free throws with four minutes to go in the third quarter.

Eckley hit a pair of 3's for Mifflin County and Kyra Sanchez added a bucket to make it 61-34 Huskies after three quarters.

Wright's 3-pointer extended the lead to 72-37, and that was it for Northeastern.

The All-tournament team consisted of Mifflin County's Eleana Eckley and Maggie Wilson, Kloster and Meyer of Northeastern, Courtney Coy of Shippensburg and Jaynelle Robinson of Williamsport.

The Bobcats will host Susquehannock on Tuesday night.
