Kinard romps for 5 TDs as York Catholic turns to title game

After every York Catholic touchdown, the Fighting Irish football cheerleaders do the number of pushups equal to their team's new point total.

On Friday night, Jakkar Kinard gave them quite the workout.

The senior running back torched York County Tech for 313 yards and five touchdowns as Catholic locked down the top playoff seed in Class 2A with a 48-20 rout.

With the win, the Irish finished the regular season 9-1 overall and 7-0 in YAIAA Division III to win that title outright. Friday, Kinard had nine runs of more than 10 yards and was never thrown for a loss over his 25 carries.

"He's just a great athlete," York Catholic coach Eric Depew said of Kinard. "He just came to play."

Kinard set the tone early, reeling off carries of 20 and 29 yards on an opening Irish drive that he finished off with a 5-yard touchdown run.

A Daniel Yokemick TD pass pushed Catholic's lead to 14-0, and Kinard made it a three-touchdown lead on a 24-yard scoring run. Josiah Smallwood's 1-yard run for Tech narrowed it to 20-6 late in the half, but Kinard's 2-yard run gave Catholic a 27-6 cushion at the break.

"He did a nice job and that's what we expect from him," Depew said.

Kinard got some help from Yokemick, who was 9-of-10 passing for 233 yards and two touchdowns. He followed up his second-quarter toss to Brenden Kennedy with a touchdown throw to Ryan Sewell that spanned 78 yards. Sewell broke a tackle at his own 40-yard line to spring the big fourth-quarter play.

"We tried to get some things in, to work on some things for next week," Depew said. "We wanted to mix it up and see what works."

York Catholic will face Newport in the District 3 Class 2A title game 6 p.m. Saturday at Boiling Springs. Newport had a bye this week, having finished its 9-1 regular season last week with a 31-7 victory over Halifax.

"I haven't seen a lot of them — they're in the Tri-Valley League — but they've got a real nice running back, nice quarterback," Depew said, "so we're going to have to have a good week of practice and be ready to play."

Tech's season is over at 4-6 overall and 2-5 in Division III.
