The Eastern York Golden Knights had a tough task Friday night — a homecoming game against Central Martinsburg, which entered the contest with an 8-1 overall record.
And while the Golden Knights fell 47-7 to the Dragons, head coach Jeff Mesich said he knew entering the evening it would be a tough contest.
Aside from Central Martinsburg's record last season, the team went 13-2 in 2015 and fell in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Aliquippa.
Mesich said Central Martinsburg controlled the lines of scrimmage in Friday's game and that was the contest in a nutshell.
"There's a reason they're a top-five team in the state," Mesich said of the Dragons.
Freshman Kaleb Corwell scored the Golden Knights' lone touchdown.
Eastern (4-5 overall, 4-1 in YAIAA Division II) won't have to look far for motivation coming off Friday's defeat. Next weekend the team hosts York Suburban at 7 p.m. The Trojans enter the contest with a 5-0 mark in league. An Eastern victory would mean the teams would share a division championship — which would be Eastern's first since 1990.
"It's another great opponent. They're in line for a playoff spot," Mesich said. "For us...If we win at home on senior night, we get a share of the division title."
