York Tech's usually-dominant passing game was tested on Saturday by the Nighthawks and the elements. Ryan T Provencher
With the temperatures dropping and the wind howling, logic said Saturday's game between Hanover and York County Tech would be dominated by defense and both team's running games.
However, of the five total touchdowns scored, four came via the passing game. The defenses combined to force six total turnovers.
Hanover (4-4 overall, 2-3 Division III) netted the final score of the game on a 7-yard pass from Logan Brown to Jeffrey Jacoby with 8:18 to play in the game and used its defense to hold on for a 21-14 win to spoil the Spartans homecoming.
"I thought the (conditions) played into our gameplan," Hanover head coach Bill Reichart said. "I thought it would negate (York Tech's) passing game and our run game has been solid all year long. But, our quarterback stepped up and made some crucial throws."
Following that fourth-quarter Nighthawks score, the Spartans (4-4 overall, 2-3 Division III) had two possessions , but they both ended with a turnover on downs.
Brown finished 8-of-14 through the air for 92 yards with two touchdown passes — the one to Jacoby and a 33-yarder to Theo Johnson to tie the game at 14-all.
Hanover's leading rusher was Justin Barnes, who finished with 87 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown. He was injured, however, with what Reichart termed a leg injury in the second half.
York Tech was led by Jordan Ray's 92 receiving yards. He scored one touchdown and was on the receiving end of a converted two-point conversion pass.
Josiah Smallwood threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 76 yards on 20 attempts.
