Susquehannock sees lead slip away vs. Twin Valley

Susquehannock football ended up with the short end of the stick in a 35-34 roller-coaster defeat to Twin Valley on Friday night.

The Warriors held a 21-0 lead in the first half and a 21-7 advantage at intermission — Susquehannock ran the ball well in the first half and controlled the lines of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, according to head coach Steve Wiles. Still, Wiles said a late Twin Valley touchdown pass from about 30 yards out seemed to give the Raiders life going into the locker room.

Susquehannock would score on the opening possession of the second half but the Raiders would answer with a 70-yard scoring scamper, making the score 28-14. From there, Twin Valley gained momentum, rattling off three more touchdowns to take a 35-28 lead.

The Warriors would answer with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter — a scoring strike from quarterback Chase Summers to tight end Ethan Schammel — to cut the deficit to 35-34.

Susquehannock elected to go for the two-point conversion however in an attempt to take the lead, and an outside run to fullback Jack Allred was stopped just short of the goal line, according to Wiles.

"We felt like we couldn't stop (Twin Valley)," Wiles said of the decision to go for two. "They had all the momentum."

With that being said, Susquehannock regained possession in the closing seconds and attempted a 57-yard field goal that fell about 5-yards short, according to Wiles.

"Helluva football game," the head coach said. "It's a shame."

The Warriors are 1-3 on the season and will face Gettysburg next weekend. Twin Valley is 2-2 on the year.
