Red Lion roars past Chambersburg, 31-10
Red Lion and Chambersburg hadn’t played one another since 1993, so no one was sure how Friday night’s non-league meeting at Horn Field would go. By the end of the third quarter, it was easy to tell which side would walk away victorious.
Led by a three-touchdown performance from Sam Emig and a strong showing from the Lions defense, which held the Trojans to just 155 total yards, Red Lion defeated Chambersburg, 31-10, to remain undefeated.
“It’s the fear of the unknown. I was a nervous wreck all day,” Lions coach Jesse Shay said. “So what you do is you try to do your stuff. Don’t worry so much about what they do. Let’s focus on what we do and do it well.”
And that’s what Red Lion did.
The Lions weathered an early storm from Chambersburg (1-2) during the first half of the game. An extended drive by the Trojans to close out the first quarter put the visitors in the red zone, but Red Lion's defense held the Trojans at the 4-yard line and forced Nazeer Taylor to kick a field goal.
Red Lion answered on the following drive, when the Lions marched down the field in seven plays. Emig capped it off with a 13-yard run - the Red Lion QB had a hand in 24 of the Lions' eventual 31 points.
“(We) were just playing together out there,” Emig said. “(The line was) creating the holes on runs and just giving me time to throw.”
Red Lion went on to put up 10 more points before the half concluded, and another 14 before the final horn sounded. Emig threw for 127 yards against the Trojans, with Zach Thorne coming into the game in the fourth quarter and airing out a 38-yard touchdown pass.
Trojans coach Mark Luther was disappointed by the loss, but thought his players put up a good effort against a tough Red Lion team.
“We came out and we drove, and unfortunately we had to kick a field goal instead of getting seven points,” he said. “Really in the first half, to come out of that against them at 17-3, it’s still a football game. … At that point I was very proud of our team. We just have to learn to make plays.”
Chambersburg scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard scoring pass from Tyler Collier to Sean Vessah. Clay Myers led the ground game with 67 yards on 17 carries.
