Middletown's 'D' no match for Northern York
For the first time since 2008, Middletown's football program is off to a 2-0 start.
Brett Myers' Blue Raiders weren't perfect in Friday's 33-0 victory against Northern at War Memorial Field, but they sure looked dominant.
Middletown lost three fumbles, all in the red zone, but showcased an ability to take over on both sides of the football.
"Some might say it was a sloppy game, but I say that it was a physical game with two teams going at each other," Myers said. "The kids are resilient and handled the ebbs and flows well."
At times, Northern's offense was able to move the ball against Middletown and had 12 first downs to show for it. But everything the Polar Bears got was hard earned against a tough-as-nails Blue Raiders' defense, which held Northern to 96 rushing yards.
Down 14-0 in the third quarter, Northern drove from its own 10 and converted two third downs to set itself up nicely on the Middletown 11. That's when Jaelen Thompson intercepted a Curtis Robison pass and returned it 95 yards for a score.
A few minutes later, after a three-and-out from the Polar Bears, Thompson bolted 58 yards to paydirt to put Middletown ahead 26-0 as the third quarter drew to a close.
In the end, it was the physicality of Middletown on the defensive front that provided the game's most telling stat: Zero points for the Polar Bears.
Northern quarterback Curtis Robison was 11-of-24 for 114 yards and an interception. He added 44 rushing yards on nine attempts.
