Dallastown powers to victory vs. West York

It took Dallastown a quarter to get its running attack going Friday night, but once it did, West York was in for a long night.

The Wildcats piled up 411 rushing yards on the Bulldogs, with three such TDs in a second quarter that quickly turned a deficit on the scoreboard into a rout.  Dallastown rolled to a 63-6 road win, with Zion DeVance providing the first two scores.

"West York does a good job of taking care of our option, so we played a little more power football," Dallastown head coach Kevin Myers said. "And it paid off."

Shaking off a pair of three-and-outs in the first quarter, Dallastown (2-0) ramped up its ground game in the second. DeVance scored two plays in, breaking a few tackles for the 13-yard TD and a 7-6 lead.

West York (0-2) responded with its third big pass catch of the night. Anton Johnson, who had completed passes of 33 and 30 yards to Joe King to put the Bulldogs in front earlier, found the senior again for a pickup of 57. Dallastown's defense held on downs, though, and DeVance broke off a 43-yard TD run six plays later for the 14-6 edge.

"We started slow and finished strong," Myers said.

Never was that more apparent than in the final 2:20 of the half. Rodney Scott stretched the lead to 21-6 with his 77-yard scamper up the middle, setting the stage for the defensive play of the game. Dallastown's Joe Munoz laid a fumble-inducing hit on Johnson, and Hector Medina was there to take back the loose ball 15 yards for a commanding 28-6 halftime lead.

"That was one of our first defensive touchdowns in a little while," Myers said. "That was one thing I was pretty pleased tonight with our guys — they were constantly trying to get the ball out."

DeVance led all rushers with 123 yards, coming on seven carries. The Wildcats had 13 rushes of more than 10 yards and didn't throw another pass after the second-quarter possession in which they took the 14-6 lead.

Dallastown returns home to face Penn Manor on Friday. West York travels to Manheim Central that night.
