York Catholic has found a pretty successful formula through the first two weeks of the football season. And it usually revolves around Jakkar Kinard and Dan Yokemick.

That was the case for the second straight week as the Fighting Irish dispatched Susquehannock, 34-17, on Friday night in Shrewsbury Township. It was another standout performance for the senior back Kinard as he galloped to whopping 202 yards on the ground and a touchdown in the Irish victory. Yokemick was also an X-factor in the win as he ran for 76 yards, threw for 102 yards and scored both on the ground and from the air.

“With Dan and Jakkar it’s a real 1-2 punch for us,” said Irish coach Eric Depew. “You have to kind of pick your poison who you want to take out, Dan or Jakkar. So it kind of sets things up for us. It’s exciting.”

While the offensive effort pushed the Irish to another non-league victory over a YAIAA Division II foe, it was the defense that helped keep the Warriors at bay early on.

Susquehannock opened up with an 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chase Summers on the Warriors' first drive to take an early lead. Moments later, after the intercepted Yokemick, the Warriors began another charge down field.

However, this time the Irish defense kept the Warriors out of the end zone during the 6 1/2 minute drive, and Susquehannock turned over the ball on downs.

On the ensuing drive, the Irish need just three plays before Kinard took the ball into the end zone on a 57-yard touchdown run. That started a run in which York Catholic scored 28 unanswered points.

“We weren’t worried about it,” Kinard said about falling behind early. “We got back on offense and we scored. We got our momentum back and that’s all we needed.”

The York Catholic back also said the offense felt more comfortable knowing the defense could make the stops.

“If we don’t score this drive, I know our defense is gonna get us the ball back,” Kinard said. “I’m never worried.”

Friday’s win was the second game in a row that York Catholic has beaten up on a school larger than the Irish. After wins against 4A teams York Suburban and Susquehannock, the 2A Fighting Irish turn their attention to another tough opponent in Week 3: Berks Catholic. It will be York Catholic's first home game of the year, a game which Depew called possibly their toughest game of the season.

“We have some confidence going in, but we have to have a good week of practice,” Depew said.
