Josh Oswalt only felt nervous about one thing.

He wasn't concerned about coaching his first game at Central York, in front of the Panthers' home crowd, or the pressure of replacing a 34-year mainstay at the helm of the program.

He just worried that his players might tense up in the spotlight and not play to the level he knew they were capable.

The Panthers players put that concern to rest right away in the first quarter, and proved to their coach that he had nothing to worry about over and over again in a 45-15 opening-week win against West York.

"Some of these guys were getting their first reps of varsity football tonight," Oswalt said. "We had a sophomore quarterback in there, the offensive line didn’t get many reps last year, a sophomore running back came in and scored two touchdowns tonight.”

That sophomore running back is Hunter Werner, who scored the team's fourth and fifth touchdowns of the game. Senior running back Noreaga Goff scored two touchdowns of his own and also set up two other touchdowns with a 46-yard punt return and a 64-yard run, both to put the Panthers inside the Bulldogs' 5-yard line.

Goff finished with 14 carries for 130 rushing yards, helping the Panthers create a balanced attack that produced a perfect split of 174 rushing yards and 174 passing yards.

“We’re talking game-changer, momentum change, those are things that when a close game happens, those things need to pop off," Oswalt said of Goff's big plays. "We expect that from them. We know what they’re capable of, and it’s nice to see it show up today.”

Sophomore quarterback Cade Pribula completed eight of 15 passes, with no interceptions, and threw for all of those passing yards.

On the defensive side, senior cornerback Jordan Bowie intercepted consecutive West York passes in the second quarter as the Panthers climbed to a 24-8 halftime lead. Three more touchdowns in the third quarter put the game away for good.

“It was definitely a statement," Goff said. "We had to make our mark from the start, so we could let everyone know that we don’t want to be the underdogs. We’re coming out to play, too. We just wanted to make a statement from the beginning, and we never looked back.”

It's a good start for the Panthers, who have games coming up against District 3 powerhouses Cumberland Valley and Hempfield in the next two weeks.

“It’s always good to win the first one," Oswalt said. "I’ve been on teams where you lost the first one and everything just rolled down hill. You always want to get off on the right foot. It’s nice to have this one under our belt.”
