Hart makes his mark in Delone Catholic victory

Delone Catholic was able to hold off Trinity High School on a cool September night to kick off the 2016 YAIAA football season, winning the game 17-7, though it wasn’t always pretty.

Penalties plagued both teams Friday night, as the two squads combined for 22 flags. Still, the Squires were able to overcome them and pull ahead in the second half.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game, but it doesn’t matter at the end of the day. A win is a win,” said Delone Catholic head coach Corey Zortman.

The rushing attack was key to the Week 1 victory for Delone, which employs a Wing-T offense. The Squires ended up with 166 rushing yards on 34 carries, and were carried by junior running back Ryan Hart, who was the catalyst for the offense as a whole.

After Trinity took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Hart burst through the seam for a 79-yard touchdown run. Again in the fourth quarter Hart came through again, taking a pass in the flat 75-yards to make the score 17-7, essentially putting the game out of reach.

“Ryan is a phenomenal athlete. He’s an extremely hard worker and he’s very flexible," Zortman said. "He just has that will and desire to be great. He’s our big-play, go-to guy.”

The Squires' defense played well throughout, keeping the Shamrock’s spread offense corralled. Their front seven was key to keeping Trinity off balance, and the pressure they applied was crucial in the win.

“We tell our guys, the key to a good pass rush isn’t necessarily getting a sack, if you can collapse the pocket,” said Zortman.

Trinity quarterback Andrew Boguski completed 16 of 30 passes, but never seemed to get comfortable. He also tried to make plays outside the pocket, which caused him to throw two crucial interceptions.
