Lampeter-Strasburg handles Eastern York with ease

Lampeter-Strasburg took the field with a brand-new starting lineup Friday, but the Pioneers yielded results that looked familiar to the home crowd in Lampeter, as the Pioneers surged past Eastern York, 42-7, in the season opener for both teams.

"It was nice to see that we were able to mix the ball around," said John Manion, entering his 19th season as the L-S head coach. "That was a pleasant surprise. We weren't depending on the one or two returning starters. We were still getting the ball to multiple players like we wanted to."

Junior Todd Shelley commanded the Pioneers' offense, completing 10 of his 17 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns and connecting with four L-S receivers.

"It was certainly a nice start for him," Manion said of Shelley. "He gained confidence throughout the game, threw some of his best balls when we needed them."

Shelley helped the Pioneers (1-0) open the scoring during the second L-S drive of the game when he rolled to his right on fourth down and three and found Cam Niemeyer in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown pass.

With five minutes and change remaining in the second quarter. The Pioneers converged on Eastern York punter Zach Doyle for a 4-yard loss to regain possession. On the first play of the next L-S drive, Shelley connected with Niemeyer for a 29-yard touchdown pass, bumping the lead up to 21-7.

Niemeyer collected five passes for 156 yards, capping his performance with his third touchdown of the game, as he sifted  through the Golden Knights' defense for a 36-yard score.

For the Golden Knights (0-1), sophomore quarterback Seth Bernstein utilized his neon-green cleats, picking up 116 yards and a touchdown on 17 keepers.

"I thought we made them earn their stuff," said Jeff Mesich after his Eastern York head coaching debut. "When you play a team, that's all you ask for. Make that good team beat you, and they did. That's a really talented team. They're going to do well in Section Two, and I'm glad we don't have to play them again."

The Pioneers visit Penn Manor (0-1) Friday at 7 p.m. to renew their rivalry while Eastern York visits York Tech (0-1) Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
