New Oxford snaps skid against winless William Penn

In a battle to see which team could end a long losing streak Friday night, New Oxford leaned hard on two offensive threats in the second half to gain the upper hand.

Ferrious Ashford ran for a third-quarter score to break a tie game, and Trevon Brown caught a touchdown late to seal it as the Colonials celebrated Senior Night by holding off William Penn, 26-14.

New Oxford (2-7 overall, 1-5 in YAIAA Division I) snapped a seven-game slide with the win, while the Bearcats ran their losing streak to 10.

The Colonials' key drive, a 10-play, 66-yard march in the third quarter with the score tied at 14-14, effectively utilized both Ashford and Brown. Ashford squeezed out a yard to convert a fourth-and-1 at the William Penn 45-yard line, and then quarterback Corban Czap found Brown on the next two plays to move the Colonials to the William Penn 11.

Ashford ran it in from a yard out three plays later to move the Colonials ahead, 20-14. The junior carried the ball 27 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns, including a 4-yarder in the second quarter.

William Penn (0-9, 0-6) threatened early in the fourth, but only got as far as the New Oxford 31 before the Colonials' defense reasserted itself. Quarterback Justin Colton had Eric Mann open on fourth down, but Jonathan Sanford laid a helmet-unbuckling hit on Mann to break up the pass.

Five plays later, Czap put the game away, locating Brown down the right sideline for the 28-yard touchdown pass and the 26-14 lead.

Czap also had a TD pass on the first play of the second quarter, breaking a scoreless tie on a 5-yard throw to Shane Rolle.

William Penn running back Khalid Dorsey answered two plays later, galloping 52 yards for a touchdown to close the gap to 7-6. Dorsey was a boom-or-bust runner against New Oxford, being stopped six times for negative yardage, but also breaking off runs of 13 and 30 yards.

Justin Colston evened things up at 14-14 late in the second quarter with a 15-yard TD toss to Tallian Lehr. The quarterback had scrambled for four yards on fourth-and-2 earlier to keep the drive going.

New Oxford wraps up its season next Friday at Northeastern, while William Penn looks to get its first victory of the season at home versus Central York.
