Kinard runs wild for York Catholic in big win vs. Fairfield
It took all of one play for York Catholic's Jakkar Kinard to know that Friday night was going to be memorable.
On his first rush against Fairfield, the junior running back scampered for 62 yards.
"That was nice," Kinard said. "That was the best confidence booster I could have. Once I got that run, I was like, 'It's going to be a fun day.'"
Indeed it was for Kinard and the Fighting Irish offense, which scored on all nine of its drives before kneeling on the ball on its 10th possession of a 59-14 victory.
Kinard led the offense with 273 rushing yards on just 19 carries, a 14.4 average per carry. He also scored five touchdowns. Both were career highs.
"He does a great job. He's an athlete and works hard," York Catholic head coach Eric Depew said of Kinard. "He has that capability to break it at any time. He's a big-play type player."
Fairfield (1-8, 0-6 Division III) actually led 7-6 after the first quarter and held a 14-12 lead with 11:03 to play in the first half following Darian Mort's 77-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Moore.
But, that would be the final time the visitors found the end zone, as the Irish ran off the next 47 points.
"They do a nice job of throwing the ball, and their quarterback is a really good athlete," Depew said. "We lost some footing and had some breakdowns in coverage."
York Catholic (4-5, 4-2) scored 27 points in the second quarter, including two touchdowns from Kinard. For the game, the Irish compiled 586 yards of offense with 444 of them coming on the ground.
For the Green Knights, the success came through the air as Mort threw for 250 yards and accounted for both of the Knights' scores. Mort threw for a touchdown and ran for one.
Moore finished with 202 receiving yards and a touchdown reception.
The Irish entered the game ranked third in the District 3 Class A power rankings and finish the season with an away game against York County Tech next Saturday.
