West York holds on to spoil Susquehannock's homecoming

It was close at the end, but West York held on to spoil Susquehannock's homecoming game with a 34-31 win in Glen Rock.

West York quarterback Tyler Folk scored the winning touchdown on a 2-yard run with 4:23 left in the fourth quarter, giving the Bulldogs a 34-24 lead. Moments later, Susquehannock's Jack Allred rushed for a 7-yard score that cut the lead to three, but the Bulldogs held off the Warriors.

"We've been stressing finish," West York head coach Jeremy Jones said. "Too many games we've let slip away in the fourth quarter. All week we were still hungover from the loss from the Suburban game. This week we stressed finish."

Friday's YAIAA Division II clash came down to a big game on the ground. Both teams utilized their backs to move up the field and reach the red zone. West York's Ryan Narber and Ay'Juan Marshall combined for 288 yards on the ground in the win.

Folk finished the game with two carries for 7 yards.

"Ryan Narber had a great game and Ay'Juan — a freshman — had a coming out," Jones said. "Ryan Narber had an injured foot all week, so I told him Ryan's going to be hurting so we have to give Ay'Juan more reps. We had it planned. When you play a freshman you just don't know what to expect."

Susquehannock (3-5, 2-2) kicked off the scoring with a field goal on their opening drive. The Bulldogs (3-5, 3-1) drove up the field and took a 7-3 lead with 3:16 left in the first, but Warriors quarterback Josh Stoneberg found Nick Tannura for a touchdown to move back in front, 10-7.

A touchdown run by Folk in the second quarter put the Bulldogs back in the driver's seat, and at halftime the score remained 14-10.

In the second half, Susquehannock pushed to a 24-14 lead before West York took advantage of a pair of fumbles and scored three straight touchdowns. The Warriors made it close, but could not find a way to regain control of the game.

There was disappointment in Susquehannock head coach Steve Wiles' voice after the loss, but he was also proud of the performance of his team.

"They played their hearts out tonight," Wiles said. "They've come along way as a football team and I've told them this was sort of a statement game for us. We're trying to build a program here and West York is a program, and they've been there for a lot of years

"We did everything to win (the game). We just didn't take care of the football. We had too many turnovers."
