Red Lion piles up points in blowout of New Oxford

It's hard to win a game if the other team scores a touchdown on every possession.

New Oxford learned that lesson in painful fashion Friday night, thanks to Red Lion quarterback Dalton Grove and wide receiver Kendrick Boyd-Gillespie.

The two hooked up for five TDs, including two nearly identical third-quarter TDs that kept the Colonials at bay en route to a 61-21 win by Red Lion that spoiled New Oxford's homecoming. Red Lion (4-3 overall, 2-2 in YAIAA Division I) took it to the end zone on all nine of its possessions, sending New Oxford to its sixth straight loss.

"They're both three-year players for me, and they both started for me last year," Red Lion head coach Jesse Shay said. "They worked very hard over the summer to establish this bond, this relationship. Kendrick looks at Dalton and they know what they want to check to."

Touchdowns on three straight catches for Boyd-Gillespie kept the Colonials (1-6, 0-4) in check, a stretch that began in the second quarter when Grove rolled right and found Boyd-Gillespie in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown and a 26-7 lead for the Lions.

New Oxford capped off the half with some fireworks of its own, as Trevon Brown got a few yards behind the defender and caught quarterback Corban Czap's pass as time expired, taking it the rest of the way for the 53-yard TD to cut the gap to 26-14.

But the Lions pulled away in the third, with Boyd-Gillespie catching a pair of TD passes from Grove at the left pylon on consecutive possessions. The senior hauled in 10 passes total for 204 yards.

"Their offense was giving us fits there in the first half," Shay said. "It's tough for us to get into a rhythm...What we talked about at the half was to get off the field on third-down defense and get our offense the ball."

New Oxford only had three first downs in the second half.

Red Lion hosts Central York next Friday, while New Oxford travels to Dallastown the same night.
