Biglerville trumps Delone Catholic for the first time since 1992

During a team meeting earlier this week, Biglerville coach Alex Ramos asked everyone in the room to raise a hand if they'd been part of a team that beat Delone Catholic at football.

Ramos raised his own hand, since the New Oxford teams he played on in the late '90s never lost to the Squires.

Sophomore Tyler Huff raised his hand, since the Bermudian Springs team he played on last season beat the Squires.

Nobody else raised a hand.

After Friday night's game, Ramos asked his team the same question in the postgame huddle.

This time every player raised a hand, smiling and cheering as they did so.

The Canners scored touchdowns on their first two possessions and shut out the Squires in the second half on the way to 21-6 victory, marking their first win against Delone Catholic since 1992.

"This wasn't just a win for us," Ramos said. "This was a win for our community, this was a win for the 23 teams before this year that either got close or couldn't quite get it done. This is a big win for not just our team, but our community."

Like many of the good Squires teams of the last two decades, this Canners' victory centered around defense.

Much of their strong defensive performance started with senior defensive lineman Victor Lopez, who coaches named as an honorary captain for the game based on strong outings in previous games. Lopez earned every bit of that title as he sacked Delone Catholic quarterback Brian Shermeyer three times, forced a fumble and recovered another.

"He's a monster," Biglerville senior Colton Sentz said of Lopez. "I'm happy to have him on my team."

Sentz starred for the Canners' offense by rushing for a team-high 102 yards on 13 carries, including a 30-yard touchdown late in the third quarter that pushed his team's lead to 15 points.

Biglerville (4-2) is now 3-0 in Division III and remains tied for the division lead with Hanover.

Delone Catholic (2-4) dropped to 1-2 in Division III play, and left coach Corey Zortman shaking his head about a continuing negative trend for the Squires.

"I just can't figure out what causes us to start slow," he said of his team's early 14-0 deficit. "I think we have good weeks of practice, it just looks like it takes us a few to get into the flow of the game. We've started slow in every game this year. I have no idea (why). I wish I knew so we could fix it."
