Spring Grove runs away with sloppy win vs. fumble-prone New Oxford

For the second week in a row, New Oxford routinely gave its opponent a short field, and for the second week in a row, the Colonials had to pay.

New Oxford fumbled 10 times in the rain Friday night, and Spring Grove recovered five of those balls. Nick Erickson and Ryan Daugherty made short work of those short fields, combining to score all five of the Rockets' touchdowns in a 37-7 rout of the Colonials at Papermaker Stadium.

Spring Grove improved to 2-3 overall, and evened its YAIAA Division I football mark at 1-1. New Oxford (1-4, 0-2) has dropped four straight.

From the start, the inclement weather tormented the Colonials, who fumbled on their first play from scrimmage and on four of their first 10 plays overall. Spring Grove's Anthony Beddia recovered a fumble on the Colonials' second possession, and four plays later Daugherty scampered 41 yards for a 7-0 Spring Grove lead.

Daugherty led all rushers with 84 yards on six carries, and he caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Messersmith in the second quarter.

A fumble later in the first quarter put Spring Grove in business at the New Oxford 29-yard line. Erickson took the pitch off the fake for a 20-yard gain on the next play, and two plays later he extended the lead to 14-0 on his own 3-yard run.

The Rockets added three more touchdowns in the second quarter for a 34-0 lead. Erickson supplied the last two of those on the ground, the latter of which was set up by a snap that sailed over punter Benjamin Rivera's head for the third time in two weeks. The Colonials managed just 1 yard of offense in the first half.

Spring Grove kicker Andrew Luckenbaugh hit a 42-yard field goal midway through the third to complete the Rockets' scoring. Luckenbaugh booted all seven of his kickoffs out of the end zone for touchbacks.

Up next for New Oxford is a trip to Central York on Friday, while Spring Grove hosts William Penn that same night for its homecoming.
