West York hangs tough to top Eastern York, picks up win No. 1 of season

For West York head coach Jeremy Jones, it was an amazing feeling to get his first win as the head coach of the Bulldogs, a game where they defeated Eastern York 42-21.

"Mentally, it was relieving," Jones said.

The stress melted away early when the Bulldogs scored 20 points in the opening quarter.

It got started with a Ryan Narber 6-yard scoring scamper to put West York up 6-0 after a missed extra point.

The next possession, Jones' offense was forced to punt, but a heads-up play by the Bulldogs landed them inside the Eastern York 35. The punt, which was delivered by senior Darian McCauley, hit a Golden Knights player in special teams coverage and the Bulldogs were able to recover the ball.

One play later, senior quarterback Tyler Folk found Terry Cains from 33 yards out to put West York up 12-0.

Eastern, however, bounced back after being scored on twice, to put up two touchdowns in two offensive plays — both by senior running back Sam Pollock.

On the first score, he broke a 78-yarder by plowing behind blocks until he found real estate along the left side.

Moments later, 5-foot-11 190 pound back scored on a 9-yard run to put the Golden Knights (2-2, 0-1) up 14-12 with 2:37 left in the first quarter. The scoring sequence was set up by a Narber fumble, which was recovered by Eastern senior Ryan Kalke.

A turning point came late in the first quarter, when Eastern York regained possession deep in their own territory. Bulldogs junior linebacker Mike Messersmith stripped Pollock of the ball, however, and took it into the end zone from 10-yards out, putting West York (1-3, 1-0) back up 20-14. The team wouldn't look back from there.

"The monkey is off our back, but next week is a new week, and we got to prepare for then," Jones said.

West York utilized the ground game well despite losing running back Cadence Thomas this past week — Jones confirmed Friday that Thomas had in fact quit the team.

Despite the absence of the YAIAA's fourth-leading rusher, the team got a strong effort from Narber, who finished the contest with 122 yards and three touchdowns.

"The line did a great job sticking to their blocks, and allowing us as a team to run through some decent holes, have to credit them tonight," Narber said.

He used those holes to go in from 36 yards and 6 yards in that second quarter to put West York up 35-14 at the half.

West York takes on Kennard-Dale next week as Eastern travels to face Dover.
