Biglerville boxes out New Oxford for first win of season

The Biglerville High School football team will host Fairfield next week for its homecoming game, but the Canners gave coach Alex Ramos a homecoming win of his own Friday night at New Oxford.
After two weeks of close losses, Biglerville (1-2) finally got in the win column with a 27-13 win against Ramos' alma mater in a physical battle largely determined by a 12-play Biglerville drive in the second half.
"We took the little mistakes that we made in the previous games, and we learned from them," Ramos said. "We did not make those mistakes tonight. We finished drives. We took care of the ball."
The Canners led the home team 14-7 at the half, and neither team could find the end zone on its first possession of the third quarter. About midway through the period, Biglerville took over the ball on its own 39-yard line after a three-and-out by the Colonials (1-2).
Ramos' team went mainly with the run to soften up the defense before facing second-and-18 on the second play of the fourth quarter. Quarterback Ben Hurda came up big, hitting a wide-open Dayne Showers for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
"We had it earlier in the game, and (Hurda) kind of overthrew me," Showers said. "We made a halftime adjustment to it. He knew it would be open, so we just made it count."
In the third quarter, Biglerville ran 16 plays while New Oxford had only three on its lone offensive possession of the quarter. That gave the Canners the momentum they needed.
"You can't possess the ball for three plays in a quarter and win a game. That just can't happen," said New Oxford coach Jason Warner.
Showers added a 22-yard scoring run on Biglerville's next possession, and New Oxford's Corban Czap scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Biglerville struck first on a 4-yard run by Hurda, capping a 10-play, 50-yard drive. The Canners running game carried the load in the early going as the drive featured just one 2-yard pass play.
"We had some nice, long drives, which keeps our defense fresh. It was important to sustain drives. It was one of the things we focused on this week," Ramos said.
New Oxford answered early in the second quarter when Josh Shultz took a run to the right side and cut back to the left before scampering 18 yards for the score.
Biglerville got the passing game going right after that. Hurda hit Gage McAuliffe for a 43-yard pass play on the first play of the next Canner possession. Sentz ran the ball five of the next six plays, including a 1-yard scoring plunge.
"It felt good to get a lead and try to get our first victory. We came through and got a win," Hurda said.
