Week 2 football notebook: Tough-minded Gettysburg continued to battle, found way to win

Gettysburg was coming off a 38-13 loss to South Western in Week 1, a game the Warriors trailed 38-0 before scoring the last two touchdowns.

Things weren't exactly going Gettysburg's way in the early going against New Oxford on Friday, either.

The Colonials, fresh off a 24-21 Week 1 win over Bermudian Springs - a victory that snapped a 13-game losing streak - were beating the Warriors 14-0 midway through the second quarter.

New Oxford led 14-7 at intermission and rolled up 237 yards and 10 first downs in the first half before the Warrior defense tightened up in the second half and limited the Colonials to 66 yards and three first downs in the final two quarters of play.

"We made a few adjustments at halftime to try to slow them down and it worked out for us," Gettysburg head coach Matt Heiser said. "The guys did a great job of doing what we asked them to do and they did a great job of studying film all week to prepare for tonight's game. They responded well off of last week's loss to a very good South Western team."

The first two weeks of the 2015 football season have to be unsettling for Bermudian Springs head coach Jon Defoe, who is a self-proclaimed "defensive guy."

The Eagles have yielded 22.5 points per game in their two losses this year. In the previous three seasons, in 34 games against teams not named Wyomissing or Berks Catholic, the Eagles gave up an average of 6.6 per game.

Defoe said the Eagles were "their own worst enemy in the first half" of last night's loss to Boiling Springs.

Several big plays led to the Eagles' undoing.

Defoe may have found his latest star on defense in junior linebacker Trevor Grim, however.

Grim recorded at least three tackles for loss, including a huge hit in the backfield on running back Bryan Malone during a fourth-down play in the second quarter.

"Trevor didn't miss any tackles and he did a much better job forcing the edge and setting the edge," Defoe said.
