Delone Catholic finishes off Columbia

COLUMBIA >> Friday night, everything seemed to go Delone Catholic's way.

It started on the opening kickoff, when the Squires forced a Columbia fumble. From there, Delone scored on its opening possession and used some second-half momentum to notch a 39-16 victory on the Crimson Tide's home field.

After the fumble, Delone (1-1) went 12 yards in six plays before Ryan Hart capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown.

After forcing Columbia to punt on the ensuing possession, which took six minutes and 14 seconds, junior tailback Sean Sneeringer plunged in the end zone on a 5-yard run for a 13-0 lead after a blocked extra point.

Columbia (0-2) answered back on a drive that took one minute and 22 seconds. Jarod Kashner reeled in a 57-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Meleik Crenshaw to pull the Tide within 13-8 after a 2-point conversion by Javon McIntyre.

After Delone's only three-and-out, Crenshaw found McIntyre out of the backfield for a 19-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

The Squires, however, gained some momentum back when Tavian Dorsey found a hole on the left side of the line to put Delone up, 19-16, heading into halftime.

The second half was different. Delone returned to its "ground-and-pound" mentality and scored on both possessions in the third quarter.

"Our philosophy is to dominate the line of scrimmage," Dorsey said. "The big boys up front helped pave our way there in the second half."

Two plays after a 47-yard touchdown by Dorsey was called back for holding, the scoring started with a 30-yard run by junior running back Zach Hart. Shortly after Columbia turned the ball over on downs, Brian Shermeyer found 6-foot-1 junior receiver Brandon Zumbrum from 29 yards out. Dorsey topped the victory off with a 21-yard scamper with 9:25 remaining in the game.

"Coach (Corey Zortman) preaches to us all the time, to finish," Dorsey said. "I believe that we did tonight, and it was a great win heading into next week."

Delone heads back to McSherrystown to take on Union City, Tenn., the back-to-back Class A state champions who bring a 31-game win streak into Friday's Week 3 contest.
