BOILING SPRINGS >> The start of the 2015 season has been a departure from the norm for Bermudian Springs' football.

On Friday night, the Eagles dropped to 0-2 with a 21-0 loss at Boiling Springs.

It's the first time Bermudian has lost three games in a row since 2007, which also was the last time the Eagles started 0-2.

"Defensively, I'm not happy with 21-0," Eagles head coach Jon Defoe said, "but if you weed out 3 to 4 plays, it wasn't a bad defensive effort. This was more like a 7-0 game."

One of those big plays was the game's first score.

On second-and-10 midway through the first quarter, Bubblers running back Bryan Malone took a handoff to the left from the Boiling Springs' 23, and appeared wrapped up after a 4-yard gain.

Instead, he shredded through the Bermudian defender latched to his body, and left him on the ground.

As he churned down field, he ran through another man, and slipped through a defensive back at midfield before finally finding open space on a 77-yard touchdown run.

"I just kept running hard and kept moving my feet," Malone said. "I knew I had to do it for my team."

"I'm not happy," Defoe said of the play. "That's tackling. That's something we work hard on and the one thing you gotta do to win high school football games."

The Eagles had many positives on defense, however.

They totaled nine tackles for loss, including two sacks, on 43 running plays on Friday night.

If you take away Boiling Springs' four biggest plays, runs of 77, 25, and 15 by Malone, and a 21-yard touchdown by Jack Foreman, the Eagles gave up 71 yards on 39 carries, an average of 1.8 per carry.

"They all count," Defoe said. "We gotta do a better job, because we can't get them to third-and-9 and give up a big play, but we made them compete other than that one play."

Bermudian got a quality punting effort from Devon Hodgen.

The junior kicked four of the Eagles' five punts for a 38.5 average and downed one beautifully inside the 20.

He booted another punt that checked up inside the 5 but was misplayed into a touchback by the coverage unit.

The touchback set up a 16-play, 80-yard scoring drive that made it 21-0 just before the half.

Quarterback Hunter Breon completed a 7-yard pass to Malone for the initial first down of the series.

Malone then gashed the defense for a 13-yard run, and Breon converted a third-and-nine with a 17-yard pass to Chase Edwards down the home sideline.

An 18-yard pass to Hunter Goshorn set up first-and-goal, but the Eagles forced a third-and-goal from the 11.

Breon completed a pass to Edwards, who was stopped inches short of the goal line.

The Bubblers hurried to the line and ran a successful quarterback sneak on fourth down, scoring with 14.5 seconds until intermission.

A scoreless second half gave the Bubblers their first 2-0 start since 2007.

The student section stormed the field after the game to celebrate with their players.

"It's great, we haven't been 2-0 since '07," Bubblers head coach Nate Freier said. "Every win, you're allowed to enjoy it and be happy about it tonight, but at midnight, you have to start preparing for the next game."
