Last season, the Susquehannock Warriors waited until their ninth game of the season to log their first win of 2014. In 2015, the Warriors were not going to wait that long.
Using a lethal running game, the Warriors bested York Catholic, 24-14, at the Fighting Irish's home field to notch their first win of the season.
"I'm happy for the kids," said Susquehannock head coach Steve Wiles. "You work hard at practice, and it feels good to get that win."
In his first year at the helm of the Warriors (1-1), Wiles felt the team had a chance to win going into the game.
"When I took over the program, I knew it was going to be a challenge," Wiles said. "These guys work hard. We have talent. We can win football games."
Susquehannock's rushing attack proved to be the deciding factor in the game, with the team rushing 40 times for 186 total yards on the night.
"We wanted to keep the ball out of the hands of their offense," Wiles said after the game. "We wanted to control the game and run the clock."
The Warriors did just that in the third quarter, when the team went on an 18-play, 70-yard drive. Although the drive ended on a turnover on downs at the York Catholic 1-yard line, Susquehannock chewed up more than nine minutes of clock.
York Catholic battled the Warriors in the first half on the back of running back Jakkar Kinard, who rushed for 91 yards on 13 carries while scoring to give York Catholic (0-2) a lead late in the second quarter.
In the third quarter while playing defensive back, Kinard appeared to slip on the turf and went down with what head coach Eric Depew believed was cramps. He went back into the game in the fourth quarter, but only had four carries for 11 yards in the second half.
"Kinard is the guy we want to get the ball to," Depew said after the game. "(When he goes down) it puts us in a tough situation."
Although the team has lost its first two games of the season, Depew remains optimistic.
"We've got a young team," Depew said. "We've got to keep getting better. There's a lot of football left."
