Suburban volleyball taking part in 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes'

The York Suburban boys’ volleyball team will help take a stand against violence against women on Friday night. The team will take part in the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event in downtown York.

The event is held to help the YWCA York raise money and awareness to end violence against women, and support victims of domestic abuse and violence. The Suburban volleyball team, along with other participants, will walk a mile through downtown York in women’s high heels.

Trojans head coach Jamie Evans said this as an opportunity to help his athletes grow as people.

“My players are not just athletes and students. They are young men,” Evans said in a news release. “I feel teachers and coaches have the responsibility to not only assist in the (growth) of their academics and athletics, but also to guide and shape them into responsible adults.”

“No women deserve to be hurt, and the fact that they are is a shame,” sophomore Luke Babinchak said in the news release. “And it needs to stop. I hope that we can help by raising awareness about this problem.”

The Trojans have raised $1,305 for the YWCA York, surpassing their original goal of $500.

“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” begins at 6 p.m. Friday from LCS Design, 320 North George Street.
