It took Northeastern a few minutes to get into a rhythm at the start of Thursday’s match against York Suburban. But when they did, the undefeated Bobcats controlled the court on their way to a sweep of the Trojans in three sets, 25-14, 25-13, 25-11.

Suburban took a 3-0 lead in the opening game before Northeastern answered with three straight points to tie the game. The Bobcats and Trojans traded points before the home side put some distance between themselves and their visitors.

“I think we were just a little bit nervous at the beginning,” Reese Devilbiss said. “We came out and I think some of the guys on the team, including myself, were just a little nervous anticipating it was going to be a big match. It was a big match, and we just turned things around and played our game. That worked for us.”

That three-point deficit in Game 1 was the only time the Bobcats trailed York Suburban the entire night. Northeastern opened up large leads in the second and third game in their sweep of the Trojans.

The Bobcats benefited from another strong outing by Reese Devilbiss. The Northeastern senior recorded a game-high 16 kills and seven aces. Devilbiss also made three blocks along the net.

“Each night (Devilibiss) will do a different thing that we need him to do,” Northeastern coach Matt Wilson said. “Tonight we felt that there were certain parts of the game that he needed to bring. We felt from the service line was one of those, and I thought he executed from the service line pretty well.”

Suburban has had a rebound year this season, entering Thursday’s game at 3-1 and already grabbing a win against Central York. Devilbiss called the Trojans a “great team” and didn’t underestimate them.

“We expected them to pass well. Work the pins really well, and we knew they had a strong middle game,” he said.
