Northeastern volleyball continues its quest with quarterfinals win

YAIAA volleyball teams had split results during their respective District 3 tournament quarterfinal matches on Monday.

Northeastern, the state's top-ranked team in Class AA, swept YAIAA foe York Suburban (25-15, 25-10, 25-17) to move on to Wednesday's semifinals, as the two-time defending PIAA champs continue their quest for a third straight district title.

The Bobcats will face Cocalico, a 3-0 winner past Brandywine Heights, in Wednesday's semifinals.

Northeastern coach Matt Wilson said his team has handled expectations well. Reese Devilbiss had nine kills, Jeff Reynolds eight, and Phillip White added six. Matt Schaeffer dished out 27 assists.

"They are pretty mature when it comes to that," he said. "It's good getting through that round."

Wilson added that he expects Cocalico to not be an easy opponent.

"They are big. They will be a big challenge," he said.

In Class AAA, after a tough first set, Central York swept Cumberland Valley (33-30, 25-19, 25-16). Up next for the reigning District 3 and PIAA Class AAA champions is rival Hempfield, which also won in three games (25-18, 25-14, 25-22) over Exeter Township.

Jason Gardner pounded 15 kills and Jeremiah Dadeboe added 12 for the Panthers. Landon Shorts notched 21 assists.

Susquehannock lost a five-set heartbreaker to Schuylkill Valley. The Warriors fell 24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-27, 15-10 in the Class AA quarterfinals.

Schuylkill will take on Lancaster Mennonite in the semifinals after the Blazers topped Spring Grove 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.
