Notebook: Thrower on rise at Eastern York

Eastern York freshman Maura DeRemer threw a javelin 107 feet last Friday to win the event at the Dallastown Invitational. That mark is 10 feet short of her personal best, which she said sometimes catches people by surprise since she's a freshman.

"I get that a lot," DeRemer said Friday.

She will likely get a few more surprised faces.

Many freshmen don't get any prior experience throwing the javelin because it is not used in junior high. DeRemer has become a quick learner, and she already bettered her career mark Tuesday with a 119-9 throw in the Golden Knights' YAIAA Division II title-clinching victory at Gettysburg. She also set personal records in the discus (91-4) and shot put (29-11 1/2) that day.

"She scored points for us in events I was really kind of questioning," coach Joel Jacobs said. "Gettysburg has some pretty good throwers."

Eastern won its first divisional girls' track-and-field championship since nabbing consecutive titles in 2008 and '09. The Knights will be hosts Friday for the eight-team Battle of the Bridge Invitational.

White Roses for 16

Sixteen track programs will send athletes to Central York on Saturday for the White Rose Invitational, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Other local schools participating include: Dallastown, Delone Catholic, Northeastern, Red Lion, West York and York County Tech. Central coach Chris Detwiler noted numerous other teams will bring only a handful of athletes, so there will be about a dozen full squads.

Detwiler's girls' team won a share of the YAIAA Division I title with Dallastown and Red Lion Tuesday. Central earned a share only after Red Lion beat Dallastown, however Detwiler said no one from Central knew after their meet. Detwiler received a text message when he jumped in his truck from a Red Lion coach stating congratulations. Since 1992, this is the first three-way share of a YAIAA division title in girls' track. Dallastown, Red Lion and South Western shared a Division I boys' title in 1999.

Josey's surprise stop

Northeastern held its "blackout" boys' volleyball match Tuesday for Marcus Josey and received a surprise visit from Josey himself.

The junior, who played quarterback on the football team and guard for the basketball squad, was diagnosed earlier in April with acute lymphocytic leukemia. He left the hospital Tuesday after treatments and said he felt well enough to attend the volleyball match. Josey sat among the student section, clad in black T-shirts that read "Marcus' Mob."

Josey took to Twitter and wrote: "Words can not explain how thankful I am for the support from the entire Bobcat community." His mother, Andrea Josey, has documented the family's fight on a Facebook page titled "Marcus Josey's Journey."

Beck to Millersville

Dover senior Ryan Beck has switched to Millersville University after an initial commitment to Delaware Valley College. Beck, who has been one of the YAIAA's top scorers in basketball, said the Marauders offered more financial assistance. He plans to major in criminal justice and hopes to one day become an FBI agent.

The Eagles guard handcuffed defenses with a 22.3-point scoring average. He finished third on Dover's all-time boys' scoring list with 1,417 points.

Beck joins William Penn graduate Tavon Parker, who will be a junior guard next season at Millersville. The Marauders finished 16-14 last season with their season ending in the PSAC tournament quarterfinals.

Lacrosse field set

YAIAA boys' and girls' lacrosse semifinals are set for Tuesday at Central York and Susquehannock with both league finals set for Thursday at Susquehannock.

The league splits the semifinals so potential championship game opponents won't see each other on Tuesday. On the boys' side, Susquehannock plays Dallastown in a rematch of their regular-season finale while West York draws Red Lion at Susquehannock. Both games will be at 7 p.m., and the girls will play at 5:30 p.m. — Kennard-Dale vs. West York at Susquehannock and York Catholic vs. Susquehannock at Central.

Even though this format is typical for the league, Kennard-Dale seniors Morgan Day and Lyndsey Duty said they prefer to see the other semifinal matchup before or after their match.
