South Western boys edge Dallastown with pole vault win for second straight year

For the second straight year, the YAIAA Division I boys' track and field meet between Dallastown and South Western came down to the final event in progress. Both times it has happened to be the pole vault.

For the second straight year, it was South Western's Cory Stanton and Trevor Bankert securing the needed points for victory.

Stanton won the pole vault, and Bankert picked up a point for third place to help South Western score a 77-73 win Tuesday afternoon at Dallastown High School. Dallastown won the girls' meet with a 94-55 victory over the Mustangs.

Last season, Stanton and Bankert went 1-2 in the pole vault to eke out an eight-point win over the Wildcats.

"It was a tremendous battle," said South Western coach Bruce Lee, whose boys' squad is unbeaten in Division I. "We told our kids it was going to be close, and I'm sure Dallastown did the same. How ironic it comes down to the pole vault two years in a row. Both teams went at it. I'm proud of the kids."

Ben Schott won the 3,200 and 1,600 for South Western and teammate Tanner Fuhrman captured the 200 and the long jump. Dallastown got individual wins from Owen Ritter in the 110 hurdles, Isaiah Ward in the 100, Justin Tracy in the 400, Jon Buytenhuys in the 800 and Tony Nelo in the shot put.

"We knew it was going to be tight," said Dallastown coach Justin Zelger. "We just didn't know which way it was going to go. Credit South Western. They are perennially a great program."

Dallastown's Taylor Forrester won three individual events and ran the opening leg of the winning 1,600 relay to help the girls' squad remain unbeaten in Division I.

Forrester began the meet with a 15.9 the 100 hurdles to finish ahead of South Western's Maddy Swanner, a district qualifier in the event last season. Swanner finished in 16.3.

"The time in the 100 hurdles is the best time I've run all season," Forrester said. "My best last season was a 15.8. I'm starting out strong this season. I'm hoping I can keep improving."

Forrester added individual wins in the 300 hurdles and the triple jump.

"That was also a PR for me," Forrester said of her 49.3 time in the 300 hurdles. "That is really exciting. Last year, I didn't run a lot of 300s. I am excited to see where I can get with that event."

South Western's Lynne Mooradian, who won three YAIAA championships and qualified for four events at states last year, won the 100, 200 and 400 and anchored the winning 400 relay team.

"She is something," Lee said. "Where we will be at the end of the year is something I am excited to see."
