Introducing the YAIAA first-team all-stars for the 2016 season.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Holden Koons, Dallastown, fr.
Koons was no stranger to winning this season. The freshman phenom won the YAIAA title and District 3 Class AAA championships. Koons became the first YAIAA player since 1996 to win the district championship. He didn't lose in singles until the first round of the state tournament. Koons also won the league doubles championship with Hunter Jones.
Michael Andrews, York Catholic, sr.
Andrews went through his own teammate and fellow all-star Alberto Bruno to win the YAIAA Class AA title. He also made it to the second round of the District 3 tournament. He and Bruno teamed up to reach the league doubles championship game and qualify for the District 3 doubles tournament. Andrews is headed to the University of Pittsburgh next year.
Alberto Bruno, York Catholic, jr.
Bruno accomplished a lot this season with the Fighting Irish. The Naples, Italy, native made it to the YAIAA doubles title game with teammate Michael Andrews and reached the championship game in the league singles tournament. Bruno knocked off second-seeded Adam Yingling in the league semifinals and qualified for the District 3 tournament. He served as the No. 2 for a Fighting Irish squad that went 9-2 during the season.
Hunter Jones, Dallastown, jr.
Jones partnered with Holden Koons to win the YAIAA Class AAA doubles title after they defeated New Oxford’s Joey Stiles and Josiah Forry. Jones appeared in the District 3 doubles tournament with David Trimmer. In the league singles tournament, Jones also made it to the semifinals.
Ben Sentz, South Western, sr.
The senior helped lead South Western to an 11-3 season and a second-place finish in YAIAA Division I. Sentz made an appearance in the league Class AAA championship game and qualified for the District 3 tournament. Sentz will continue his tennis career at York College next year.
Joey Stiles, New Oxford, sr.
Stiles helped lead the Colonials to a successful 2016 campaign, where they went 14-4 and 6-2 against divisional opponents. Stiles made quite the run in the league tournament, advancing to the Class AAA doubles championship game and finishing third in the singles tournament. He also qualified for the District 3 tournament.
Grant Wierman, Spring Grove, sr.
After enjoying a good season on the basketball court, Wierman continued his success on the tennis court. Wierman took the No. 3 seed into the league tournament and reached the YAIAA quarterfinals. Spring Grove's No. 1 player posted notable regular-season wins against Central York’s Chris Maderitz and South Western’s Gavin Kenny.
Adam Yingling, Gettysburg, sr.
The Warriors' top player helped his team clinch a share of the Division II title. Yingling won the YAIAA Class AA doubles tournament with Zach Kiick and reached the district doubles semifinals. In addition, Yingling advanced to the quarterfinals of the YAIAA singles tournament.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Ron Floess, Littlestown
Floess helped turn things around in Littlestown. After going 3-10 last season, the Thunderbolts captured a share of the YAIAA Division II title, their first since 1989. The Bolts sported a 10-4 overall record and went 7-1 in divisional play in 2016.
