Koons the last YAIAA singles player left
After sending six tennis players to the District 3 singles tournaments at Hershey Racquet Club on Saturday, the YAIAA is down to just one — No. 1 seed Holden Koons of Dallastown. And then there was one.
Koons started his day with a win against Reading's Joel Castillo, then beat fellow freshman Jackson Muraika of Cedar Crest, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to Monday's semifinals. Muraika had taken down South Western's Ben Sentz in the first round, 6-4, 6-0.
Koons will take on fourth-seeded Milo Nagle of Cumberland Valley at noon Monday for a spot in the championship match.
The top four seeds in Class AAA all advanced to the semifinals. Nagle was pushed to three sets in both of his first-round matches Friday and was the only AAA semifinalist who didn't win in straight sets.
The YAIAA third-place finisher also bowed out Saturday. New Oxford's Joey Stiles lost to Hempfield's Calvin Athey, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round.
In the AA bracket, all three YAIAA competitors fell in the first two rounds.
YAIAA champ Michael Andrews of York Catholic beat Gettysburg's Adam Yingling in the first round, but lost to top-seed Dan Trifoi (Wyomissing) in the quarterfinals.
Andrews' teammate Alberto Bruno lost to Donegal's Noah Zern in the first round, 6-4, 6-3.
