YAIAA tennis top seeds Koons, Andrews unscathed
Dallastown's Holden Koons and York Catholic's Michael Andrews proved why they are the top seeds in the YAIAA singles tournaments, both advancing to Saturday's quarterfinals without dropping a game.
In Class AAA, Koons took down his first-round opponent, Justin Gruver of New Oxford, without losing a game and then followed that taking down his regular-season teammate Tyler Lilie in the same fashion.
The biggest upset of the Class AAA tournament was Sachin Venkatesh's first-round win against No. 6 seed Alec Shue of Red Lion, 6-2, 7-5. Venkatesh followed that with a win against another Wildcat, Jonathan Burns, 7-5, 6-4.
Koons will face Central York's Chris Maderitz in the quarterfinals on Saturday, while Venkatesh will face South Western's Ben Sentz.
In the Class AA tournament, top-seeded Andrews defeated West York's Aidan Mikula and then Delone Catholic's Allen Sweeney without dropping a game in either match.
Littlestown's Noah DeCampo upset No. 8 seed Nick Wool of Bermudian Springs in a three-set battle, 5-7, 6-2, 10-6. He then took down fellow Thunderbolt Levi Wilhide in the second round, 6-2, 6-1.
Andrews will face Delone's Nick Durski in the quarterfinals, while DeCamp will take on the Fighting Irish's Alberto Bruno.
In both classifications, all of the other top eight seeds advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals.
