Early goal enough for Susquehannock in shutout of Gettysburg

It was the battle of Warriors boys' soccer programs on Tuesday afternoon at Gettysburg High School and, also, a battle for early-season YAIAA Division II supremacy.

The Susquehannock Warriors scored a fantastic goal, then absorbed 40 minutes of Gettysburg ball possession to come away with the 1-0 win.

Senior Colton Mumley scored a 25-yard volley off a Gettysburg clear in the fifth minute to provide the final margin.

"We always joke about it with him," Susquehannock head coach Brett Maxwell said. "He scored a goal as a sophomore similar to the one tonight, and Colton doesn't remember much, but he always brings that goal up."

Maxwell added that Mumley is more of a creator than a scorer.

However, with Susquehannock losing their top-four scorers from last year, Mumley will be looked to for more scoring in 2016.

Gettysburg responded well, and actually had more shots attempted in the game, 11-8.

However, only four of the Gettysburg shots were on target.

"We have to figure out how to deal with when teams drop four (defenders) against Matt (Yingling)," Gettysburg head coach Scott Hancock said.

Yingling generated one shot on goal — and two decent opportunities before half. He sent one high and the other wide from about 25-yards out on a severe angle as the first half ended.

Susquehannock nearly had a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Zach Buchanan picked up a loose ball in the Gettysburg end and crossed to Jason Weger, who put the ball in the net with a volley at the top of the box.

However, the play was called offsides.

Weger generated the two best scoring chances of the second half. Halfway through the half, Buchanan fed him out wide on a counter attack and he struck the ball to the near post, where Gettysburg goalkeeper Yanni Tassou lunged left for the save.

Later, Weger would hit the post on a chip.

Susquehannock's defense choked off the box the rest of the way and held on for the win.

"To be able to shut out a team like Gettysburg on their field, I'm extremely proud," Maxwell said.
