Scoring trio leads Delone Catholic to hot start

The winning formula this season for Delone Catholic in boys' basketball has been scoring at least 65 points in a game.

The Squires did that for the fourth straight game resulting in their fourth consecutive win, as they defeated visiting Littlestown, 70-59, in YAIAA III action Tuesday night at Sonny Shephard Gymnasium in McSherrystown.

Delone (4-2, 3-0) received a combined 60 points from senior Logan Alexander and sophomores Brady Alexander and Evan Brady. It's the third straight game that the Squires' trio has contributed at least 60 of the team's points.

On Tuesday, Logan Alexander led the way with 29 points and also handed out seven assists to go with four rebounds. Brady added 17 points and eight boards and Brady Alexander tallied 14 points.

"We don't really care who scores the points," Logan Alexander said. "We look for each other and the big guys (Nathan Lawyer and Shamus Keefe) are great screeners and rebounders. We try to look for them under the basket, too."

Brady had paced the team with 26 points in each of the team's victories on Friday (67-57 over Biglerville) and Saturday (84-61 over South Western).

"They all have great skillsets and they aren't selfish players," Delone coach Lawrence Williams said of his prolific trio. "It makes it easy when you can look for the open guy and trust that they will make the shot. We want to move the ball and get the best shot that we can and not worry about just finding one guy to shoot."

The trio scored the team's first 31 points and 52 of the first 54 on Tuesday.

Delone trailed just once in the game when Littlestown's Nick Dooley scored to start the second half, but Brady responded with a 3-pointer to give the Squires the lead for good, 31-29, with 6:32 left in the third quarter.

Littlestown (2-3, 1-2) trailed 52-39 before running off the first six of the fourth quarter, but got no closer as Delone put the game out of reach with a 9-2 run to lead 61-47 with 3:18 to go.

Logan Alexander has been a three-year starter now, by far the most experienced starter on the team and Brady and the younger Alexander played sparingly for most of their freshmen seasons before coming on late and then becoming starters this season.

Evan Brady has bumped his scoring average from 5.4 points per game last season to 16.7 this season, while Brady Alexander has jumped from 5.9 points per game to 13.7 this season.

"Their confidence has skyrocketed since last year," Logan Alexander said of his younger teammates. "They had some freshmen jitters last season, but those are gone this year. We're a confident team and we are playing well."

Logan has upped his average from 13.3 points per game to 19.2 points per game, and is in position to make a run at 1,000 career points as he sits at 689 for his career.

A couple areas of concern for Williams is the team's defense (they are allowing 60.2 points per game this season) and rebounding (they were outrebounded by Littlestown, 36-23).

"We're playing good team ball and playing well," the third-year coach said. "But we've got to get better defensively and on the glass. We aren't a big team, so we have to go after rebounds as a group."

The Squires return to action Friday when they play at York County Tech at 7:30 p.m.
