Littlestown hires Forster to coach boys' hoops

Littlestown dipped south of the Mason-Dixon Line to find its new boys' basketball coach.

John Forster, who grew up in Taneytown, Md. and played basketball at Francis Scott Key High School and Frostburg State University, was approved at the Thunderbolts' new coach last week.

“Littlestown is close by, I’ve heard a lot about the town," Forster said. "I’ve played basketball up there at the YMCA. Just meeting a bunch of people around the area, it seems like a great place to be around. I’ve heard a lot of very good things about the kids involved in the program. It’s very enticing to jump into a tight community.”

Forster worked as an assistant varsity coach at Francis Scott Key from 2009-15 before working as an assistant coach at McDaniel College last season.

“He’s got a good resume, college coaching experience, played college ball," Littlestown Athletic Director Jeff Laux said. "He’s very energetic and you can see that the kids are really going to relate to him well. He's very passionate and that passion really came out.”

The year at McDaniel helped Forster grow as a defensive coach, he said. The Green Terror ranked third in NCAA Division III in scoring defense last season.

"I learned a lot from (McDaniel coach) Kevin Curley, phenomenal stuff," Forster said. "I’m very good with player development, I feel like I can make a difference there and build up some skill sets to get these kids believing and go from there.”

Forster replaces Scott Motter, who was let go by Littlestown in June and later accepted a teaching position at Catoctin High School in Thurmont, Md.
