Trinity eliminates Delone Catholic boys

LOWER ALLEN TWP. — Delone Catholic was able to keep Trinity's fast-paced offense under control for the most part in the first half.

The periods of time when the Squires couldn't keep Trinity in check — a 7-0 run to open the game and a 10-0 run before halftime — turned out to be the difference as Trinity dropped Delone Catholic, 71-61, in a District 3 Class AA boys' basketball quarterfinal Saturday at Trinity High School.

Delone Catholic coach Lawrence Williams expected scoring spurts from a team that regularly scores in the 70s and 80s.

"We knew that would happen, it was just a matter of how we would weather the storm — if we would tank or if we would bounce back and continue to fight," Williams said about the 10-0 run. "We came out in the third quarter and gave up a few baskets, but we continued to fight throughout. If we didn't give up that run, I think this game ends differently.

"I'm extremely proud of my guys," Williams said. "I've never been happier."

Delone finishes the season with an 11-13 record. Trinity (17-6) advances to play Lancaster Mennonite in a Wednesday night semifinal at Giant Center.

Following Trinity's 7-0 run to start the game, Delone Catholic answered in a big way.

Bryce Mondorff started it with a layup plus the foul, and Logan Alexander finished a 9-0 run. Alexander made a pair of 3s, and his 10 points in the first quarter put the Squires up by two headed into the second quarter.

Delone stretched the lead to five on a Mondorff bucket, but Trinity was able to run and put points on the board in a hurry.

The Shamrocks ran off 10 straight to end the half thanks to Sean Good's work on the glass and some transition scoring from Austin Gilbertson.

Alexander (14 points) and Mondorff (10) accounted for 24 of Delone's 26 first-half points.

Following another 7-0 Trinity run, Alexander hit a 3-pointer to end the third quarter to cut the deficit to 12 points.

Alexander hit a jumper and Brady Alexander followed with a 3 to cut the Trinity lead to 55-51 with 4:23 to play.

"When we get the ball back, we don't need to rush," Williams said of what he told his club during the break. "We still need to remain patient and take the shot we wanted. We came out and turned the ball over on the far end, and that led to them getting a bucket. We never got any closer than that."

Gilbertson made 7-of-8 free throws in the closing 1:15 of the game to clinch another trip to Hershey for the Shamrocks.

A junior, Logan Alexander finished with a game-high 27 points for Delone. Mondorff added 18.

"Logan always brings energy," Williams said. "He can drop 30 at any given time. I guess he had something to prove with wanting to go out and give a tremendous effort. That's something I said to him before we came out here. I told him just to go play ball. He's an outstanding basketball player and I'm excited to see more from him in the future."
