Defensive punch moves Gettysburg to 9-2

The Warriors held the Trojans to two points in second quarter

Gettysburg coach Jeff Bair was in a much better mood Tuesday night than he was on Monday.

The day after he expressed disappointment in his team's performance in a win over Delone Catholic, Bair had no qualms with how the Warriors played in a 56-45 home win over Chambersburg to claim the Gettysburg Lions Club Holiday Tournament.

"I think we were a little more focused tonight," Bair said. "All in all, in the first half we were pretty darn good. Defensively we were very good."

Defense certainly was the key to Gettysburg's tournament victory. After holding Delone Catholic to just 35 points on Monday, the Warriors (9-2) limited Chambersburg (6-3) to a 18-of-62 shooting performance on Tuesday.

The Warriors were at their best in the second quarter, holding the Trojans to just two points as they extended a six-point first quarter lead to a 15-point advantage at halftime.

While Chambersburg opened the first quarter hot by hitting a pair of 3-pointers, Gettysburg quickly switched to a zone-defense that halted the Trojans' offense.

"We played a 3-2 (zone defense), that kept (Chambersburg's) Cole Christian from shooting," Gettysburg captain and tournament MVP Marquise Camel said. "When he got the ball, we double-teamed him up top and he didn't even think about shooting. That was what worked."

Despite being down 17 going into the fourth quarter, the Trojans went on an 18-9 run that cut the Warriors' lead to eight points with just over a minute remaining. But by then it was too late for them to mount a serious comeback.

Although Bair believes the Warriors still have plenty of room for improvement, he said he was pleased with where they are right now. After losing three starters to graduation last season, he didn't expect his team to be 9-2 after 11 games.

"I wouldn't have said 9-2, but I wouldn't have said it was impossible either," Bair said. "They respect each other and that's key. They can get on each other and give each other clear messages. We were prepared tonight and that always makes you feel better as a coach."

Prior to Gettysburg's win, South Western beat Delone Catholic, 55-41, to win its first game of the season in the tournament's consolation game.

Despite starting out slow, the Mustangs (1-9) heated up in the second and third quarters and went into the fourth up 12 over the Squires.

It was then that things started to get shaky. Delone Catholic's Logan Alexander and Alex Maitland hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the South Western's lead to six. But the Mustangs rallied behind Job Brown, who scored six points down the stretch to help preserve the win for the Mustangs.

"We've been in this situation before where we had a lead, then they came back," South Western coach Nathan Brodbeck said. "And we haven't maintained it then. We did a nice job keeping our composure and not panicking. We just finished the game."
