Central York veterans key Panthers' win

Central York entered its court for the first time this season with many new faces. After graduating a handful of seniors, including Sam Saxton and Charlie Gingrich, this current crop of Panther players needed to get acquainted with varsity basketball quickly.

Only two players remain from last season: Jared Wagner and Nathan Markey. Head coach Kevin Schieler said he knows Wagner and Markey have to play key roles if this team wants to be successful in 2015.

“(Jared) and Nathan are our lone two returners, and those two know that they have to pick it up,” Schieler said.

Friday night in the nightcap of the Central York Tip-Off tournament, the Panthers looked to their two veterans after falling behind in the first quarter.

“Obviously, we didn’t start very well. I knew we’d have some jitters because we’re such a young team,” Wagner said. “We were down a bunch, and I felt like we needed that energy, so I like to bring that energy.”

Wagner and Markey combined for 17 points to ignite the comeback and help Central York to a 50-47 victory against Penn Manor (0-1) in front of a home crowd. Both hit crucial free throws to seal the win and set up a final against Eastern York (1-0) on Saturday.

Schieler said Wagner, his point guard, helped break the team out of its early jitters with his speed.

“Jared is an energy guy, and as long as he can make the other guys on the court stay at the same energy level he has, we are going to be successful,” he said. “He did that tonight with his enthusiasm, getting up and down the court quick.”

After allowing six Penn Manor 3-pointers in the first half, including two from both Nate Brown and Nick Lord, the Central York (1-0) defense clamped down and forced tough shots. Brown, who scored seven of his 17 points in the second half, missed the game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Lord finished with 17 points on five 3-pointers, but managed six points in the second half.

Eastern York overcame a rough first quarter to cruise to a 60-45 win against Delone Catholic in the opening game. Broguen Nicholas led the way with 16 points en route to the season-opening victory.

Head coach Jon Reichard said he liked what he saw from Nicholas, but he knows Nicholas will become more of a facilitator going forward.

“I think there’s times that he feels like he has to do it all by himself,” Reichard said. “Over the offseason, he was probably passing more than he ever has. I think when he gets his feet wet with this new bunch of kids, he’s going to trust them more.”
