Basketball notebook: David Archer takes HACC job; Reichard transfers to Susquehanna
Former local high school basketball coach David Archer is returning to Harrisburg, where he will lead a program at the college level.
Archer accepted the Harrisburg Area Community College men's basketball job Friday. His move comes after spending the last two years in York, where Archer guided New Hope Academy and Hilda Goodling Impact Academy to District 3 Class A championships.
"For me it's kind of surreal," he said. "Having strong ties locally, I'm looking to recruit locally before regionally. It's been a roller-coaster 72 hours."
Archer paused before adding, "An exciting roller coaster."
This will be the second time Archer has coached at the college level, but the first time he will be a head coach. A Harrisburg High School graduate, he spent three years as an assistant coach at Penn State Harrisburg. Archer then took the Pine Grove boys' basketball job, where he won a district title, and finally wound up in York the last two seasons.
There, he coached New Hope to a District 3 Class A championship in its last year of existence. After New Hope shut its doors, the Impact Academy opened in its place. Archer still had a job, but everything changed in March when that school closed.
"When it closed, this was the job I was interested in," he said.
HACC finished 4-20 last season and is a member of the Division III National Junior College Athletic Association.
Reichard transfers to Susquehanna
Former Eastern York boys' basketball standout Dalton Reichard has transferred to Susquehanna University. Reichard's father and former high school coach, Jon Reichard, confirmed the move Monday.
On the high school level at Eastern, Reichard won YAIAA Division III and IV Player of the Year honors as a senior in 2013. A 6-foot guard, Reichard is transferring from Lock Haven — where he played with former Northeastern guard Elijah Cooper.
Reichard averaged eight minutes per game and scored a season-high eight points as a sophomore. He will have two more years of athletic eligibility upon joining Susquehanna, which finished 19-7 last season.
