YAIAA basketball seniors go out in style

As a senior planning to major in finance in college, it's only fitting that Donovian Maxfield was money from beyond the 3-point arc during the YAIAA senior all-star game Sunday evening at Red Lion High School.

The 5-foot-10 guard from Northeastern connected on 5 3-pointers and scored a team-high 22 points in the 116-106 victory. He plans to continue his education at Wingate University in North Carolina this fall .

In the girls' game, Delone Catholic's Ally Shipley sank a free throw with 4.4 seconds left to lift her team to a 56-55 win. The doubleheader was sponsored by the York White Rose Lions Club.

Maxfield's team took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Hanover's Kyle Krout with 2:20 to play. They led by eight at halftime, and Maxfield sparked the team with four of his five 3 -pointers during the second 20-minute half.

"They just started falling," Maxfield said. "I like to call myself the microwave because I heat up quick. That end of the court (at Red Lion) has always seemed to be nice to me."

His teammate from Northeastern Kobi Nwandu added 19 points, including several dunks. Krout and Najah Fink of Dover chipped in 14 points each, and Gettysburg's Marquise Camel sank four 3-pointers in the game to wind up with 12 points.

"It's all fun, but at the end, the intensity went up a little," Maxfield said. "Everybody wants to get the W. Everybody wants to win. It got competitive."

The leading scorer in the boys' game was Montrel Morgan of William Penn with 26 points.

"I had a good time playing against Kobi and Donovian," Morgan said. "We've been on the same team for AAU. Najah Fink too. It was also fun playing with Jared Wagner and Nathan Markey (of Central York). They are great guys. I thought we played pretty well together."

Morgan's classmate at William Penn, Chyna Steele, also took home the leading scorer honors in the girls' game with 17 points for the winning team.

The six-foot Steele was all over the court, diving for loose balls, rebounding and making some steals that led to easy baskets for Red Lion coach Don Dimoff's squad.

"(Steele) is a heck of a player," said Coach Dimoff. "She does a lot of good things. When she gets hot, she is almost unstoppable because of her size, her quickness, her athleticism. It was fun coaching her (Sunday). Better than coaching against her."

Red Lion's Courtney Dimoff added 14 points and Shipley scored 13 points for the winners. Morgan Bamberger of West York had a team-high nine for the road-jersey all-stars while Olivia Sollberger of West York, Ashley Stone of Susquehannock and Jordan Kloster of Northeastern chipped in with eight points each.

Courtney Dimoff and Kloster have been adversaries on the court, but the two 1,000-point scorers will be on the same team next season at Millersville University. Kloster plans to major in physical therapy, while Dimoff is undecided.

"Obviously, I think it is going to be a faster game," Courtney Dimoff said. "I'm going to have to get physically stronger. I think it is going to be a lot of fun with us playing together."

Kloster agreed.

"It's going to be a higher level of competition," Kloster said. "I definitely think its going to be a lot of fun. I plan on working on my jump shot a lot this summer."
