It was heartbreak city for Gettysburg as the 14th-seeded Warriors came up just short of upsetting third-seeded Cedar Cliff, but fell, 2-1, in ten innings in the opening round of the District 3 Class 5A baseball tournament Monday afternoon in New Cumberland.

Cedar Cliff (16-5) trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the tenth, with runners on second and third and two outs, when Maddux Ryan hit a hot shot toward Gettysburg shortstop Ethan Ketterman.

As Ketterman positioned himself to make the play, the ball hit off of the umpire in the center of the diamond and was ruled dead, with Ryan being awarded first base and loading the bases.

"It was a bad bounce, but you have to make the next play," Gettysburg coach Ryan Brady said. "We couldn't get key hits today, but our kids fought hard every inning of every game this season."

Chris Dane then drew a walk to tie the game, and Denny Snyder followed with a single to center that plated Grant Breneman with the game-winning run.

"This is what you play baseball for," Snyder said. "You play for moments like that, and I was just looking to barrel up a ball and get it in play."

Gettysburg (14-8) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the tenth when Zach Ketterman sliced a double down the left field line that plated Jay Geesaman, who had singled and stolen second base with two outs.

The starting pitchers, Ryan for Cedar Cliff and Josh Topper for Gettysburg, were both outstanding all afternoon long. Each left the game when they reached the 100-pitch limit.

Ryan worked 8 2/3 innings, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and three walks as he tossed 70 strikes out of 100 pitches.

"Maddux was great and so was their guy," Cedar Cliff coach Scott Lackey said. "They were both fantastic and this was game where it's a shame that either team had to lose."

Topper went 7 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, yielding five hits with five strikeouts and four walks. He threw 102 pitches with 65 of them being strikes.

Brady had strong praise for both pitchers as well.

"That's the best game I've seen Josh pitch, and that's saying something after how well he pitched against Dallastown last week," Brady said. "Their guy had some nasty stuff. He had a great slider, a great change up and he really kept us off-balance."
