Gettysburg beats West York, stays atop standings
It was Logan Carbaugh's game to win, and he finished the deal.
Gettysburg High School's junior right-hander picked up a complete-game victory Wednesday, as the Warriors stayed undefeated with a 4-3 win over West York.
Gettysburg is now 7-0 on the season, 6-0 in YAIAA Division II play. The Bulldogs are 4-5 overall, 4-2 in YAIAA Division II.
"I just come out here and do my job. Throw strikes. Let the defense field," Carbaugh said. "We’re just doing a great job in the field and batting. None of us are really sticking out, we’re just playing as a team. We’re getting wins as a team.”
Carbaugh was not overpowering but he hit his spots all afternoon. He needed just 86 pitches to go the distance.
The Warriors have been a solid team across the board this season — good defense, good pitching and a patient offensive unit that puts the ball in play. With that being said, senior standout Michael Tempel hasn't taken the mound recently because of a arm soreness.
While the team expects Temple to return soon, Carbaugh's effort was appreciated.
“He was efficient. It’s a testament to him throwing strikes," said Warriors head coach Ryan Brady. "Kept the ball down. He’s got a nice one-two punch with his fastball, curveball. When he’s working down in the zone, we have a team that can play behind him. He was exactly what we thought he would be today.”
Wednesday's contest wasn't the cleanest the Warriors have played this year. The team ran themselves out of some scoring opportunities on the base paths, and two first-inning errors allowed the Bulldogs to go ahead 2-0.
Gettysburg answered by scoring four runs in the top of the third inning, however. The rally was anchored by two walks, a hit batter, a West York error, and a two-out, two-run base hit from Ryan Haskins.
West York, to its credit, played a good game against a good team and was right in it until the end. Ben DePasquale's double to left field scored Colton Kubicki to make the score 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Gettysburg threatened yet couldn't score entering the bottom of the seventh.
DePasquale got on to lead off the final frame and looked to steal second base. A close play at the bag ensued and the call went in favor of Gettysburg — it was seemingly the first bang-bang play that went the Warriors way all afternoon, yet it came at a critical time.
Carbaugh took it home from there against the bottom of the Bulldogs' batting order.
"We put up two in the first and got one later on. We had a couple opportunities to get some guys across, we just couldn’t come up with that one extra hit, one extra ball through the infield," said West York head coach Scott Erickson. "They’re a solid team. They don’t make mistakes. They have really good infielders, their outfielders went and got everything. It’s tough to really get anything extra on them.”
