Balanced Biglerville stays unbeaten in division
Biglerville kept its undefeated record in YAIAA Division IV intact by defeating Fairfield, 10-4, in baseball action Thursday afternoon at Fairfield.
The Canners did most of their damage in the third and seventh innings as they plated five runs in the third, to take the lead and four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Fairfield (4-2, 3-2) committed three errors in the game, two in the third and one in the seventh.
"Our pitching has been solid this year," Fairfield coach John Ridge said. "We knew that Biglerville could hit the ball. We hoped that we would play good defense, but we had a couple of mistakes that really cost us."
Biglerville (7-2, 7-0) trailed 2-0 in the top of the third when the Canners sent nine men to the plate and walked away with a five-spot in the frame. Brock Chronister and Connor Griest each supplied two-run singles to the rally.
The Green Knights got a run back in their half of the third, but Biglerville had an immediate answer in the top of the fourth when Noah Ayers grounded out to score Brandon Miller.
"Even though we didn't score in the first, we hit the ball hard that inning. So I knew that we would be able to score some runs today," Biglerville coach Jeff Taylor said. "We got some clutch hits today, so I'm very happy with the way that we played."
Chase Long worked the first four frames on the hill to earn the victory for the Canners as he exited after throwing 55 pitches, 42 of them for strikes. He allowed three runs and six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
"Chase threw well for us," Taylor said. "He told me after the fourth inning that he didn't really feel comfortable on the mound so I took him out. He wasn't hurt, he just didn't like the mound."
The hosts cut the deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth on a Chase Stadler single.
Fairfield grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first after Darian Mort singled in Hunter House and Austin Ivey followed with a double to score Mort.
The Canners received two hits apiece from Long, Chronister, Griest, Hunter Kime and Tyler Weikert. Meanwhile, Cody Small led the Knights with a trio of singles and Mort had two knocks.
