Biglerville caps three-win week with a one-sided victory
Biglerville wrapped up a three-win week by pounding out 17 base hits in a 17-5, five-inning victory over visiting York County Tech in Friday afternoon YAIAA baseball action at Yost Field.
The Canners (7-8 overall, 7-5 in YAIAA Division IV) had previously defeated the top-two teams in YAIAA Division III earlier this week. They topped Eastern York, 3-1, on Monday and then Littlestown, 11-1, on Wednesday. York County Tech is now 0-13 on the season and 0-10 in YAIAA Division IV
"This was a good way to finish a good week for us," Biglerville head coach Jeff Taylor said. "We have to stay focused, though. We have three more games next week with Hanover, Fairfield and Delone."
Pitching for the first time since being hit in the face while batting during Biglerville's first game of the season, Sean Redding survived a rough top of the first inning, as the Spartans collect four hits and plated three runs.
"Sean was a little rusty after not pitching for a month," Taylor said. "He settled down after the first inning and did a nice job."
Biglerville's offense picked up Redding immediately in the bottom of the first, when the Canners sent 14 men to the plate and scored 10 runs on nine hits. Noah Ayers plated a run on a triple; Brock Chronister, Seth Re and Redding each had run-scoring doubles; and Sam Laird, Logan Reever, Chronister and Ayers supplied RBI singles during the rally.
"You gotta like when you respond with 10 runs after giving up three in the first inning," Taylor said. "We didn't get down after they had a good inning."
Ahead 12-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Biglerville struck for five more runs. Ten batters came to the plate during the onslaught, with the Canners recording six hits.
Redding worked all five innings to earn the victory, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out three while throwing 85 pitches, 49 of which were strikes.
Biglerville was led offensively by Reever out of the leadoff spot, as he collected four hits — all singles — scored three times and swiped a career-high four bases, to go along with two RBI. Biglerville also received two knocks apiece from Chronister, Ayers, Redding, Laird and Jorden Trostel.
York Tech received two hits each from Justin Nell and Logan Warfield.
The Canners return to action on Monday with a home game against Hanover, starting at 4:15 p.m.
