Behind six scoreless frames from senior righty Jimmy O'Boyle, Delone Catholic defeated Biglerville, 9-3, in YAIAA Division IV baseball action on a warm and windy Monday afternoon in McSherrystown.

O'Boyle yielded five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks as he threw 54 of his 83 pitches for strikes.

"We've been joking recently that Jimmy hasn't thrown a breaking ball over the plate all season, but his slider was spot-on today," Delone pitching coach and assistant head coach Dave Neumayer said. "Biglerville is a pull-hitting team, and we knew that, so the gameplan was to work the outside part of the plate and he did that very well."

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Squires had a runner on first with one out when O'Boyle hit a one-hopper back to pitcher Noah Ayers for what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, but Ayers' throw went into center field. Courtesy runner Dylan Hartlaub came all the way around to score.

Austin Kuntz followed with a walk, then Hunter Keith brought home two runners with a single and Keith eventually came home on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

"We've had too many slow starts this year where it's taken us too long to figure out a pitcher and that happened again today in the early innings," Neumayer said. "When they threw that ball away, we took advantage of it."

Delone (6-3, 5-1) tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Early on, the Canners' best chances to score off O'Boyle came in the third and fifth innings

In the third, the Canners loaded the bases with two outs before a strikeout ended the threat. Then in the fifth, the first two hitters of the inning reached base to bring the top of the order to the plate with no outs. But O'Boyle retired the next three batters on a strikeout and a pair of groundouts.

"We had five errors, too many passed balls and too many wild pitches. Just too many mental and physical mistakes today," Biglerville head coach Jeff Taylor said. "We gave them too many second chances and that's been a problem all year for us. You can get away with that against some teams, but not a good team like Delone. They'll make you pay when you do that."

Biglerville (4-6, 4-3) didn't go away quietly in the seventh as the Canners plated three runs when Logan Reever singled home one and Ayers doubled home a pair with two outs.

Wes Deporter paced Delone with three hits and drove in a run, while Keith knocked in three and scored twice. Roth contributed a pair of base hits.

The Canners were led offensively by two hits apiece from Reever and Brock Chronister.

Both teams return to the diamond on Wednesday with division matchups. Delone plays at Hanover, while Biglerville hosts York Catholic with both games starting at 4:15 p.m.
