Red Lion, New Oxford cheerleaders place in state's top 3

Red Lion placed second in the PIAA competitive spirit championships, and New Oxford took third when the championships wrapped up Saturday at Hershey's Giant Center.

Both teams medaled in the co-ed division. McDowell won the title with a score of 83.43. Red Lion's 74.20 score was just 0.20 points ahead of New Oxford.

The Lions and Colonials were the only two YAIAA teams to reach the finals of their division. Six teams advanced from Friday's preliminary rounds, including Red Lion as the only local team to bypass the semifinal round. New Oxford finished first in the semifinals with a 71.87 to earn its spot in the finals.

Three teams repeat as YAIAA cheerleading champions

In other action, both Central York and Dallastown narrowly missed out on a spot in the finals, finishing third in their respective semifinals.

Dallastown's semifinal score of 70.37 was just 0.16 points behind the second-place finisher in the medium schools division. And Central York's 73.67 was 1.63 points out of second place in the small schools division.

York Catholic scored a 67.13 in the small-school semifinals, and Dover scored a 63.27 in the medium-school semifinals.
