PIAA roundup: Gettysburg boys' soccer back in semis

The Gettysburg boys' soccer team punched its ticket to the PIAA Class 3A state semifinals by knocking off District 1 champion Radnor 1-1, 3-2 in penalty kicks Saturday at Cedar Crest.

The Warriors will face District 11 champ Northwestern Lehigh in the semifinals after the Tigers knocked off Daniel Boone 2-0 on Saturday. This will be a rematch of last year's Class 2A quarterfinal.

Trailing 2-1 in penalty kicks, goalkeeper Yanni Tassou saved a PK to keep it a one-goal deficit before Cade Wilhelm tied it. After the next Radnor attempt hit the post, Kellen Fies buried his attempt to put the team ahead 3-2 after four shooters.

With the game on the line, Tassou made one final stop to push the Warriors to the semifinals.

“This is a really interesting team we have,” said coach Scott Hancock. “They don’t seem to get shook too much. …Radnor had a huge student section and they were quite loud. It didn’t seem to bother them.”

Gettysburg (22-3-2) scored first as Matt Yingling scored on a counter attack to put the team ahead 1-0 in the first half. Robert Lawson had the assist on the goal.

Despite Radnor’s fast, strong and direct style, the Warriors were able to hold the 1-0 lead until late in the second half.

Off a long throw-in by Radnor, the ball bounced up and hit a Gettysburg defender's hand in the box. Radnor converted the penalty kick to send the game into overtime.

Fairfield 9, Benton 3: Fairfield scored early and often in its PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals victory over Benton on Saturday at Tulpehocken.

The Green Knights (24-1-0) will advance to play Warrior Run in Tuesday's semifinals, at a site and time to be determined. The District 4 champions defeated Benton in the District 4 final, 2-1.

“We stuck around and watched them for the first 20 minutes or so,” said head coach Phomma Phanhthy on Warrior Run. “They’re a good team and they’re in the same division as Benton. Their style is probably about the same.”

Fairfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game and pushed that lead to 4-0 at the half.

Annabel Anderson led the way with four goals while Hannah Logue added two goals and three assists. Nora Clarke chipped in with two goals and Sarah Heinbaugh also had a goal.
