Tuesday's best: West York volleyball stays hot
The West York Bulldogs continued their winning ways on the volleyball court Tuesday night, dispatching Gettysburg in three games (25-17, 25-16, 25-17). The win was the Bulldogs ninth divisional win and 14th overall on the season.
The Bulldogs never trailed during Tuesday’s meeting with the Warriors and controlled the pace of play on their way to a win.
“They’re focused every single time they come into the gym,” West York coach Joe Ramp said. “It doesn’t matter who comes in our gym or wherever we go. They gotta take care of business, which is why we gotta be calm, collected and just take care of what we can do.”
That’s what West York did against Gettysburg in a true team win. Sophomore Julia Rill led the team in kills with nine, while senior Marisa Krinock and freshman Tesia Thomas each recorded eight. Senior Abby James put up 28 assists and junior Kate Tate finished the night with four aces.
West York came away with a win in front of a large crowd that was on hand for the school’s eighth annual “Dig Pink” game for breast cancer awareness. Those games can bring added pressure for West York, but the team performed well this time around.
“Tonight we had a pretty good feeling about it, and we just did everything we knew and won it,” James said.
The Bulldogs have been one of the best teams in the league and have suffered just one loss all season. They have five games remaining, all of which are against division foes.
Cross country
Maldonado leads Spring Grove to sweep: Jordan Maldonado placed first overall in a five-team meet to help boost the Rockets past Delone Catholic, Susquehannock, Littlestown and South Western.
Tristan Smyser and Justin Culp placed fourth and fifth overall to solidify the Spring Grove lineup. Dalton Miles and Jonathan Timmons of South Western placed second and third overall to help the Mustangs go 3-1.
Delone Catholic, the host team, went 2-2, Susquehannock went 1-3 and Littlestown went 0-4.
McLain sets another course record: Maddie McLain continued her stellar season by setting another record, this time running the Samuel S. Lewis State Park course in 19 minutes, 35 seconds. The previous record of 19:43 was set in 1986.
McLain's teammates Madison Nalls and Olivia McLain plaed third and fifth overall to help the Golden Knights sweep Fairfield and New Oxford. Fairfield's Lindsey Lytle placed second overall and New Oxford's Raleigh Bateman placed fourth.
Girls' soccer
Susquehannock blows past West York: After a tight first half, Susquehannock dominated the second half to stay undefeated in YAIAA Division II play. Emma Lonas scored twice and Ashlynn Weger added a goal.
The Warriors are now 9-0-1 on the season in divisional play.
Boys' soccer
Canners stay undefeated in division play: Connor Griest scored twice in the first half and Jared Dotson-Jones scored in the second half to push Biglerville to a 3-0 win against Delone Catholic.
Biglerville goalkeeper Noah Mattson made three saves to secure the shutout.
